Hello!

My name is Alex Ortiz. I graduated in 2018 from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland, with a B.F.A. in Animation. While in college, MICA’s faculty honored me with four competitive awards, and I was selected to display my work at five public exhibitions. My senior thesis 3D film also was showcased by the Animation Department at ArtWalk in MICA’s Commencement Exhibition in May 2018. I also completed an internship with Fifteen Four in the spring of 2018, and later did freelance commercial work for Ciena.

After graduation, I was working as an animator/compositor at acclaimed Baltimore advertising firm TBC, working primarily in production/editing of videos/animations, including rotoscoping, color correction and adding motion graphics. I started at TBC, in the summer of 2018 as a full-time independent contractor before being quickly promoted in January 2019 to a full-time employee position. I have worked on projects for clients including McCormick, Visit Baltimore, Erickson Living, Connections Academy, Smyth, Gilchrist, AAAS, MileOne, KT-Tape, and Ventev.

After a year at TBC, I moved to Portland, Oregon to live closer to family and get back to my passion of 3D and improve my professional marketability.  Beginning in October 2019, I immersed myself in a 10-month rigorous program at CG Spectrum where I earned two diplomas from CG Spectrum in Houdini FX and Nuke VFX Compositing. I take pride in the diverse skillset I have acquired from studying Houdini, Maya, Cinema 4D, Nuke, Redshift, Octane Render, After Effects, and Premiere. I am also well-versed in VEX, Nuke Script, DAZ 3D, Marvelous Designer, RubberHose 2, X-Particles, and the rest of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, and more.

My training as a 3D Artist forms the foundation of my work as a VFX Artist, Motion Designer, and Compositor.  As a conceptually driven designer, I strive to inspire my audience with motion and imagery that cannot be replicated in the natural world. I derive my inspiration from a wide range of mediums including soft sculptures, Russian filmmakers, JavaScript computer-generated visuals, and printmaking. With my vivid imagination, I merge these bits of inspiration together and integrate them with color, sound, composition, and technical excellence.
